The DABapp is a concept app created for DAB (Design Akademie Berlin). DAB is a young university, willing to learn and improve where students are standing at the forefront of change and innovation in the design city – Berlin.

Communication between current DAB students, DAB alumni, Professors, visiting professors, guest lecturers and with outside world is very limited.

I created a challenge which focussed on this keystone problem – lack of communication. The challenge was “Improving communication within DAB and its communication with outside world”. By facilitating communication the app increases team work, innovation and productivity while reducing the gap between academics and real-world. In its most basic form the DABapp connects the above mentioned holders and keeps them updated.

Insights:

  • Students wanted to be closer to the real world dynamics of their respective fields.
  • Preferred a collaboration with companies over quick money jobs in unrelated field.
  • Lack of projects across different study fields to understand the real world workings.
  • Lack of interaction with professors of other programmes in the university.
  • No knowledge of projects of other students except one’s own class.

How will communication solve the problem of academic and real-world gap?

Businesses are beginning to understand the need of user-centric design and innovation. The Boost sessions by DAB students will help establish recognition of the university among businesses. These boosters will give the students the opportunity of exposure  and they can have an impact on real-world by helping companies innovate and solve problems. The DABapp can inform about the Boost session projects on its newsfeed. Professors can be a part of these boost sessions. This gives mutual value to DAB and its stakeholders and thus also making existing companies as stakeholders. The solution positions DAB as a brand at the forefront producing innovative content, created by student collaborations that can be within academic fields, real-world projects using the Boost sessions for an existing brand/company.
